Identity Crisis begins in Concepción Buena Vista, Guatemala, where the Solano Family grows this Red Bourbon at high elevation. It’s naturally processed at the farm, meaning the coffee cherries are dried whole with the fruit still intact, allowing all that fruit and sugar to influence the seed inside. The result is a beautifully fruit-forward coffee with the sweetness and depth we’ve come to love from this family’s harvests.
But this particular lot took a little detour.
Before roasting, we aged the green coffee in a freshly emptied Rye Whiskey barrel from Oaklore Distilling here in North Carolina, allowing the coffee to absorb the barrel’s warming spice, sweetness and aromatics without ever touching a drop of whiskey.
The result is Identity Crisis: a meeting of Guatemalan coffee and North Carolina whiskey culture, and a playful nod to the two places that have shaped our own story. Expect a complex, warming cup with notes of sweet vanilla, citrus zest and rye spice, rounded out by a cool spearmint finish.
